TORONTO – (July 27, 2010) After countless months of rumors and hype, Orangeville natives Logan Cotton-McGuinness (11-0-1, 5 KO’s) and Buzz Grant (9-3, 4 KO’s) are set to square-off in one of the most anticipated grudge matches in Ontario boxing history, Saturday, September 25 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, for the NABA Lightweight title.

The card, UNDISPUTED: RIVALS, is being promoted by United Promotions, Southern Ontario’s leader in live boxing.

Earlier this month the undefeated Cotton-McGuinness demolished Montreal’s Jorge Banos via first-round TKO, setting the stage for the most important fight of his career.

“Logan is just getting better and better with every fight, and on September 25th he’ll take the buzz out of Buzz Grant,” said Cotton-McGuiness’ trainer, Chris Johnson.

“Logan is going to break him down, and finish him off. Buzz is a good fighter, but Logan is just in another class.”

Heading into the battle for Orangeville, Canadian, and North American bragging rights, the 31 year-old Grant is on a roll of his own, going undefeated in the past four years, and racking up six straight wins in the process, including two Canadian titles.

Orangeville is one of Canada’s oddest boxing hubs. With a population hovering around 30,000, the city 90 kilometres northwest of Toronto produces a disproportionate amount of good fighters, with Cotton-McGuinness and Grant at the top of Orangeville’s boxing heap.

A win by either fighter will result in an automatic world rating by the WBA, and a chance to catapult themselves into not only national stardom, but also international prominence.

“There isn’t anything more to ask for in a fight,” said Adam Harris, Cotton-McGuinness’ Promoter

“Even though there are real career implications, there’s more to this fight than the prestigious NABA title. These guys are fighting for something that can’t be measured in dollars or rankings; local pride and bragging rights. And because of that, this is the fight of their lives.”

Also on the card, two of Ontario’s top prospects put their respective undefeated records on the line as Mississauga’s Sam “The Product” Vargas (4-0, 1 KO) will take on Orangeville’s Ryan Wagner (2-0, 1 KO).

Wagner, the protégée of Orangeville’s most famed boxer, now turned trainer, Bryon Mackie, is coming off a devastating 3rd round KO victory of Chris Aucoin.

Vargas for his part is quickly cutting a swath through the Canadian welterweight landscape, notching four straight wins to start his career earlier this year, including resounding decision wins over the vastly more experienced Jose Leonardo Corona and Frankie Abbiw in his previous two fights.

Leading the way for Vargas is his trainer, Chris Johnson, who is quickly becoming one of the best teachers of the sport, not only in Canada, but around the world.

For tickets to UNDISPUTED: RIVALS starting at $25.00, go to ticketmaster.

TORONTO (July 5, 2010) – Logan Cotton McGuinness (10-0-1, 4 KO’s) has crisscrossed Canada, fought in the US, and has even been to Ireland twice in going undefeated in his first 11 pro fights. But this Saturday night at Mississauga’s Hershey Centre, he’s coming home.

McGuinness will be making his Ontario debut, taking on tough Quebecer Jorge Banos (6-6-3) in a bout scheduled for 8 rounds, and presented by United Promotions in association with Hennessy Sports Canada.

“This is my first fight in Ontario, and I’m really looking forward to finally showcasing my talents in front of my home fans, ” McGuinness said.

In September of 2009, McGuinness and Bannos battled over four exciting rounds in Montreal, with McGuinness coming away with a unanimous decision.

Currently riding a two-fight win streak, Banos has redemption on his mind, and some momentum on his side.

“I already know Banos can fight, and that he’s tough as nails. He’s come to my home province and beaten two Ontario fighters back to back, so I’m taking this personally. Everyone keeps talking about how great Quebec fighters are, and they are definitely talented, but Ontario is emerging as a serious rival. With that said, I’m looking forward to not only winning, but punishing Bannos and stopping him in style. I can’t wait to send this guy back down Highway 401 with his mouth shut and his tail between his legs.”

Saturday night’s stacked card also features a Canadian Welterweight Championship showdown between Justin Fountain and Tebor Brosch, as well as local favorites Denton Daley, Ryan Wagner, Horace Hunter, and Julius Bundas.

For tickets to this historic night of professional boxing starting at 25$, go to www.ticketmaster.ca or call (416) 872-5000 today!

Via The Boxing Examiner:

TORONTO, ON (Wednesday, June 9, 2010) – Two-time world champion “The Canadian Kid” Steve Molitor (32-1, 12 KO’s) loves the United Kingdom. In November of 2006 he captured the IBF Junior Featherweight with a 5th round KO over Michael Hunter, in Hartlepool, and is 3-0 in Great Britain as a professional.

On July 23rd, Molitor returns to the UK to begin his second reign as IBF 122 lb. champion, when he defends his newly recaptured title against British and Commonwealth Super Bantamweight champion Jason Booth (35-5, 15 KO’s).

Molitor’s first trip to England, in September of 2002, saw him dominate Booth’s younger brother Nicky over 12 rounds to capture the Commonwealth Bantamweight title.

Fifteen months later Molitor returned to the UK and continued his British breakfast by trouncing Londoner John Mackay over 8 one-sided rounds.

Orion Sports Management and FTM Sports have teamed up to promote the event, and will announce a host city and venue in the near future.

“Fighting in the UK brings out the best in me. The atmosphere is always electric, and the fans are so passionate,” Molitor said.

“That just makes me even more motivated than ever. I know Booth will leave it all in the ring on July 23rd. He wants my belt, and some revenge for his brother. But I’m not leaving anything to chance. That title is coming back to
Canada.”

Not only does Molitor love the UK, but the UK obviously loves him, with the British Board of Boxing Control naming him their 2006 Foreign Fighter of the Year.

And on July 23rd, UK fight fans can further enjoy Molitor’s skills live on Sky-Tv, while Molitor’s Canadian fans can see the fight on TSN.

Allan Tremblay and FTM’s Frank Maloney have enjoyed a long friendship, and are delighted to finally have the opportunity to work together.

“We are looking forward to a great event on July 23. Frank and I are old mates from back in the day, and it is a distinct pleasure to join forces with him on this promotion,” Tremblay said.

“Steve Molitor simply loves fighting in England and will put on a great show for the fans.”

Legendary UK boxing promoter Frank Maloney is equally effusive about all aspects of the match-up.

“Jason’s life has been a roller coaster and if he pulls this off it will complete a remarkable story,” said Maloney.

“Steve has been on top form on previous British trips against Jason’s brother, Nicky and Michael Hunter. This time I am hoping his luck will run out.”

“It is great to work with Allan again. He and his staff are complete professionals, and a pleasure to deal with.”

RAMA, Canada (AFP) – Canada’s Steve Molitor will attempt to reclaim the International Boxing Federation super bantamweight title on Saturday against revenge-minded Takalani Ndlovu of South Africa.

Molitor, 31-1 with 12 knockouts, stopped Ndlovu in the ninth round in 2007 in the first defence of the IBF crown he had taken from Britain’s Michael Hunter in 2006.

Molitor, fighting a week ahead of his 30th birthday, defended his crown five times before being stopped in the fourth round of a 2008 unification fight with Panama’s Celestino Caballero.

“I had the big fights, the big paydays, and I lost all that,” said Molitor, ahead of the fight at this northen Ontario venue. “I’m hungrier than ever to get that back.”

The Canadian has won three times since then to put himself in position to reclaim the crown vacated by Caballero, but to do so must beat Ndlovu, 30-5 with 18 knockouts.

“He should be less concerned about what I did against Caballero and worry about how I beat him around the ring in our first fight,” Molitor said.

“I’m healthier and stronger than ever heading into a fight. And given the fact that I’ve already smacked him around the ring once, I know what to expect out of him. Come Saturday night I’m going to reclaim my title.”

Ndlovu will try to avenge the defeat in his first world title fight and claim his first major world title.

Molitor took less money to have the fight staged in his homeland but Ndlovu is not concerned about how judges in Canada might see him compared to those in South Africa.

“I’m not fighting the judges,” he said. “I’m fighting Steve Molitor.”

TORONTO, ON – (Monday, March 1, 2010)
Considered by many to be Canada’s top boxing prospect, Orangeville, Ontario’s Logan Cotton McGuinness (9-0, 4 KO’s) is about to take a major step forward in his young career this Saturday at the Casino De Montreal.

Not only is Canada’s top lightweight stepping up his competition by facing Mexican warhorse Pedro Navarrete (24-6-3, 13 KO’s), but he’ll do it as a lean, mean, and far stronger junior lightweight.

“Logan has been making 135 lbs. almost too easily,” said his promoter, Adam Harris, MD of Hennessy Sports Canada.

“We think he can make 130 on a controlled schedule, and emerge as a very, very dangerous 130 lb. fighter, without compromising any of the qualities that have already made him the best in the country at 135 lbs.”

He’ll need all that strength and more against Navarrete, who has proven himself to be not only durable, but flat-out dangerous.

In June of 2006 he flew to Japan and went 10 spirited rounds with Jorge Linares, then considered the world’s top boxing prospect, en route to a hard-fought unanimous decision loss.

In his last fight, this past January, Navarrete halted a two-fight losing skid in violent fashion, demolishing Adrian Tellez in the seventh round to set up his test against McGuinness.

“Navarrete is by far the toughest fighter I’ve ever had to face,” said the 22 year-old McGuinness.

“Not only has this guy been in there with some of the best in the world, but he’s shown he’s more than just a guy who can go rounds. This guy steps into the ring to win every time out. And win big.”

“A win over a guy like Navarrete will show the world that I’m one of the best young fighters out there.”

Trainer Chris Johnson – the man who honed Steve Molitor into one of the best Junior Featherweights in the world – sees nothing but great things ahead for his young protégée.

“It’s rare that you have a guy as gifted as Logan, but at the same time, so eager to learn. I tell this kid something once, and it’s like he’s been doing it all along.”

“That’s why when you look at Logan’s career, you see such eye-popping improvement every time out. To the point where, in just his tenth pro fight, he’s more than ready to face a quality thirty-three fight veteran like Navarrete.”

Also appearing on the card will be Hennessy Sports’ newest signing, all-action welterweight Samuel Vargas (1-0, 1 KO)

“This kid is a promoter’s dream,” said Harris.

RAMA, ON (Wednesday, February 10, 2010) – Since losing his IBF Junior Featherweight world championship to Celestino Caballero in November of 2008, “The Canadian Kid” Steve Molitor (31-1, 12 KO’s) has been on a single-minded mission to regain his belt, and re-establish his dominance at 122 pounds.

On March 27th at Casino Rama, in Rama, Ontario, that mission can finally be accomplished when Molitor (ranked #2 by the IBF) faces South African Takalani Ndlovu (30-5, 18 KO’s, IBF #1) for the now vacant IBF Junior Featherweight world title, during the main event at Rumble at Rama XI.

“All I’ve been thinking about is becoming a two-time champion, and nobody is going to get in my way,” Molitor said. “Especially Ndlovu.”
Molitor and Ndlovu are more than familiar with each other.

In July of 2007, in Molitor’s first of five successful title defenses, the Sarnia, Ontario-born fighter capped off a spectacular showing by stopping Ndlovu in the ninth round in a fight many point to as Molitor’s finest performance.

“As good as I was the first time against him, Ndlovu’s crazy to think he has a chance of beating me in a rematch.” Molitor said. “I’m here to not only regain my title, but to show the world I’m even better now than I was during my first title reign. That means laying an even more convincing beating on Ndlovu this time around.”

For Ndlovu, March 27th offers the South African a chance to show the world that he’s a better fighter than the one that was dominated so thoroughly by Molitor in their first fight.

“I have earned my mandatory spot in the IBF rankings, and the fact that I’m now # 1 and Steve # 2, speaks volumes. This time around it will be far different from the last time I fought Steve,” Ndlovu said.

“I’m not overconfident, but the fact that I have agreed to go back to Canada, shows my mindset for this fight. This is most likely my last chance to win the IBF world title and I’m prepared to do what ever it takes to beat Steve. Come March 27th, people will see a different Takalani Ndlovu from the last time, and a different Steve Molitor. I may even stop Steve.”

“This fight has been the by-product of patience, resiliency, and some tough, tough negotiations,” said Allan Tremblay, President of Orion Sports Management. “Ndlovu’s promoter, Branco Milenkovic, was the IBF Promoter of the year, and deserves some credit in making this happen. He was tough but fair.”

“But the important thing is it’s a done deal. And we have a truly great fight between two hungry, determined fighters looking to be called the best in the world.”

There’s more to Rumble at Rama XI than just the mouthwatering main event.

In the evening’s co-feature, Canadian Heavyweight champion, Greg “The Steel Pole” Kielsa (11-0, 5 KO’s), of Brampton, Ontario, defends his title against Toronto’s Neven Pajkic (11-0, 5 KO’s), over 10 rounds.

And in a special added 10 round attraction, burgeoning female superstar, Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton, of the Philippines, via San Francisco, California, faces Toronto’s Lisa “Bad News” Brown for the vacant WBA Super Bantamweight world championship.

“Orion Sports Management is thrilled to be able to put on a card like this. We’ve got two world title fights, and a rare showdown between undefeated Canadian Heavyweights fighting for the national title,” Tremblay said proudly.

“We just signed Ana Julaton to a two-year Canadian promotional contract, and we’re sure she’s going to turn some heads both inside and outside the ropes.”

“But we put her in tough. Lisa Brown has a track record of winning, and comes to fight every time out.”

“In addition, we are staging three scintillating undercard fights, featuring Felix Mercedes, Justin Fountain, Jason Douglas, and Stephan Boyd in top-to-bottom the best fight card we have ever put on at Casino Rama.”

Rumble at Rama XI will be promoted by Orion Sports Management, in association with Casino Rama.

Casino Rama has played host to Molitor’s past nine fights, and has welcomed his army of fans for some of his most exhilarating triumphs, and his gut-wrenching setback to Caballero.

“We’re so proud to have Steve topping off another great night of fights at the Casino, which is undoubtedly the home for world class boxing in Canada,” said Jeff Craik, VP Marketing for Casino Rama. “Every time Steve steps into the Casino Rama ring, the place just erupts. And now, with his fans by his side, he has an opportunity to become a two-time world champion at the place that really is a second home for him.”

Tickets for Rumble at Rama XI are $125, $75, $50 and $25 and are available in-person at the Casino Rama Box Office, and at all TicketMaster locations, by calling (416) 870-8000 and online at www.casinorama.com. Ticket prices do not include applicable taxes or service charges.
